Laying of the foundation stone
Years of planning and preparing are over: On the 20th of February 2010 the foundation stone for the new primary school was layed. Mr. Dr. Class Dieter Knoop, the German Embassador joined the exercises.
Therewith everything is set to tie in with the old times of the German school in Addis Ababa.
The German (Embassy) School Addis Ababa has a long tradition starting already in the twenties and thirties of the last century. In particular during the regency of Emporer Haile Selassie I. the school were growing so that the school was one of the biggest German school throughout Africa.
Relating to the plitical changes during the seventies the school was expropriated and it was forbidden to Ethiopian students to attend the school. The relocation to the compound of the German Embassy succeeded as well as the renaiming in "German Embassy School Addis Ababa" / " Deutsche Botschaftsschule Addis Abeba" (DBSAA). Not until to the political changes during the late eighties this status quo was altered. A new compound was offered to the school and a aggreement between the German Departement of Foreign Affaires and the Ethiopian State was signed.
As a result the school could move to the new compound 2000. Since 2003 the school was allowed to offer the IB. Since 2007 as a "Memorandum of Understanding" (MoU) was signed between the German Departement of Foreign Affaires and the Ethiopian Gouvernement was Ethiopian students can attend the school again. Ever since the school is growing...
Accordingly the kindergarden was enlarged and now in a second step the foundation stone for a new primary was layed. This was possible mainly with the aid of the German gouvernmant who is paying 90% of the costs. The chairman of the school board, Mr. Gerhard Mai, the German embassador, Mr. Dr. Class Dieter Knoop, and the head of school, Miss Biegel, pointed this out during their speeches. The German Embassy school is now leading in a prospering future...
